Joenos Sulfur Wicks Non-Dripping, Barrel Disinfection

Empty wooden barrels are a paradise for mold and acetic acid bacteria. Sulfur wicks are the classic way to prevent this: burned inside the barrel, the sulfur dioxide produced disinfects the interior and neutralizes odors.

These wicks do not drip and burn evenly, so no melted sulfur ends up at the bottom of the barrel. Beekeepers also use them for the hygiene of beehives.

You do not need this if you only ferment in demijohns or plastic containers, which you clean with water. For a wooden barrel, on the other hand, sulfur wicks are part of the basic equipment in the cellar.
